While Dark and Darker is still in a legal haze, one player is working on porting the popular game to a new platform: Fortnite.

This single fermelon developer is a software engineer who posted a video of your unfinished project in Fortnite Creative.

The project started back when the UEFN didn’t exist yet. I think I started with this idea in January 2023. I’ve been upgrading to Unreal Engine 5 since I’ve done a few Unreal Engine 4 projects and wanted to be on the latest version to use nanite, lumen and all these great technologies from Epic.

Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) was released on March 22nd and I thought this was the best and fastest way to get this project in hand and play with friends. Using the foundation of Fortnite, which, when you think about it, has a lot of the mechanics that Dark and Darker uses, like chests, a shrinking storm, etc.

Originally conceived as fun, the author claims he worked on it “non-stop every day for about 6 hours”. Using his personal RPG experience and YouTube videos, he worked on the Crypt 2 map and made sure it was as accurate as possible. He even used the same Unreal Engine assets as in Dark and Darker.

fermelon is hoping the map will be available to other Fortnite players in the second half of April as it currently sits and waits for the Epic creator program to be approved. Until then, he will continue to work on the map. While it was in the works before the current lawsuit between Nexon and Ironmace, he hopes it will be a “breath of fresh air” for those who want to play the Ironmace RPG.

I really wanted to show this to the community as it looks like we won’t be playing a playtest anytime soon and wanted to give the community a breath of fresh air. This is the only role it has played in this. People love drama and are already joking about Nexon coming for me but those are just jokes, Nexon can’t copyright the genre or how you place multiple assets inside Fortnite.

This is not only another wild example of the creativity of the gaming community, but also one of the many great projects that have emerged since the introduction of the Unreal Engine editor in Fortnite. At a time when player creations in this growing metaverse are becoming more and more of the AAA gaming industry, perhaps the next wave of new, exceptional new games will come from there, just as DotA did from Warcraft 3.
