Because the Trio limited-time mode was so popular in Fortnite, it made its full debut in the game in 2021. With the new update it has now been removed and the fans are disappointed.

Some of us were quite happy when it was finally possible to play Fortnite in a trio. For many, this was the perfect way to have a few rounds with two friends in the colorful battle royale game.

If you now look at the available modes, you will probably immediately notice two things:

  • there is a ranked mode
  • the trios have been removed in the popular modes

Ranked takes the place of Arena mode and keeps players hooked with fresh rewards.

In which modes has Trio mode been removed? Trio mode is not available in build mode, zero build, or ranked. In zero building ranked only duo is currently possible.

Here you can see the selection in build mode, in zero build and ranked with build:

This means you can play alone, with a friend, or with three friends in most modes. A party of three players is no longer possible unless the three of you are playing with a randomly chosen person.

You can set this up by filling up the group in matchmaking, so that you then have a group of four. Alternatively, you can also take on groups of three against groups of four without refilling.

“It makes no sense”

Why was popular mode removed? That is unclear so far. The patch notes simply state that the mode has been removed. Scrolling through the comments on various Reddit threads, a few guesses pop up.

Some players suspect that Fortnite wanted to step up after Warzone 2.0 introduced ranked mode. Others believe this should reduce wait times and motivate players to try other modes.

How are the players reacting? In various Reddit threads, players share their displeasure. User “samantha_sk” writes: “It doesn’t make sense that they do that. This reminds me of when trios didn’t exist and we had to wait for it to be added… Now we’re going back a step again” (via Reddit).

ItsBullseye also recalls the time Trios mode was integrated into Fortnite: “When I first got into the game, I asked my friends to come online to play Trios and it did was a lot of fun. I rarely have more than two friends online to play with at any one time.” (via Reddit)

Numerous players agree with him in the comments. Many of them only play Trio mode. A few users write that they don’t want to fill up their party with random players because many players are toxic or don’t speak their language. This makes it difficult to make agreements in the match.

My MMO author Nicole Wakulczyk regrets the change: When I started the game and clicked through the modes, I noticed that my favorite mode is missing. I’ll admit: I too am quite disappointed with the removal of the trios. While there have been times when we’ve been in pairs and rarely as a team, Trio is the mode I’ve played the most – whether it’s Fortnite, Apex, or Warzone.

I also think that so many players are disappointed because they have established groups and it has become routine to run around the map with your two favorite mates and spot other trios.

What most players share is the hope that the removal is only temporary and the popular mode will be back.
